Academic dishonesty, cheating in the test, stealing other people’s work without citing the sources, not referencing the originals, all references should be included and appropriately cited to give credit to the other. Therefore, academic integrity is a form of ethical behavior and usually involves honesty and fairness in students’ academic work. Students have a responsibility to understand the policy and the regulation that govern academic integrity. Students usually exercise academic integrity by citing their sources correctly, completing their assignments independently, and ensuring that they uphold integrity in their work even under demanding times. The six values that act as the cornerstone of academic integrity are trust, responsibility, courage, honesty, respect, and fairness.
Cheating is a form of academic dishonesty and entails copying other people’s work or the attempted use of unauthorized material, notes, the information in intellectual activity. for instance, an individual can consider using phones in an exam room. On the other hand, plagiarism is the usage and submission of other people’s ideas, work, and results without acknowledging them in work through proper citation. Plagiarism occurs when a person paraphrases other people’s work without referencing them. Citing enables the instructors and the audience to trace the sources of the information. This allows the instructor to distinguish between individual original work and the borrowed information.
Another form of academic dishonesty is an improper collaboration that involves sharing individual assignment with other students to copy. It also occurs when students work together without the degree of the permissible collaboration set out by the instructor. Instructors typically allow collaboration based on what they intend to assess and accomplish through a specific assignment. Students also have a habit of fabrication and changing information to fit in their academics exercise or to acquire unfair academic benefits. This can involve tampering with assignments that have already been marked to gain unfair advantage violates academic integrity policy. Taking other people’s work and calling it’s your own is an example of plagiarism. Students need to keep track of the sources and learn how to cite them properly. For instance, if they fail to cite sources correctly while borrowing information from the website. The student should consider seeking clarification from instructors regarding the class policies when assignment expectation is unclear.
